Before Sustainable Practice presents detailed information about sustainable gift-giving for your holidays, we also encourage you to consider the most sustainable holiday gift you could give this year: 52 weeks of a digital copy of One Step This Week. These weekly action steps offer knowledge to empower committed people like you to become even more sustainable. (It’s also a gift to Earth this holiday season!) Until December 31, we are offering a 20% discount on a yearly subscription to One Step, which will cost just $40 for benefits added to weekly fact-packed writing. Those benefits include a half-hour personal Zoom consultation with sustainability expert and One Step writer Fred Horch, occasional insights on environmental news, and the benefit of being in a community of people who are committed to sustainability as one of their priorities. If you haven’t yet purchased a paid yearly subscription, this is the very best time for you to subscribe for about the cost of a cup of coffee a month. Or give a gift to others who share your priorities for a sustainable future. Click the green button below and know you are choosing a truly sustainable gift.
The holiday season is approaching, and many of us who care about the environment are looking for meaningful ways to share joy with our loved ones while staying true to our values. One wonderful solution is giving experiential gifts – presents that offer an activity, adventure, or learning opportunity rather than a physical item. This might be tickets to a local theater performance, a cooking class, a family camping trip, or a meditation workshop. These gifts create lasting memories through shared experiences or personal growth opportunities.
Research shows that experiential gifts not only bring lasting happiness and strengthen our connections with others, but they also offer an elegant solution for environmentally conscious gift-givers. When we give experiences, we share something precious while naturally avoiding the packaging and shipping typically associated with physical presents. This week, let's explore how to give memorable experiences that align with both our giving spirit and our environmental values.
The Joy of Experiential Gifts
Experiential gifts offer unique benefits that make them especially meaningful:
Create lasting memories that can be treasured for years to come
Build stronger social bonds through shared activities
Support local businesses and communities
Naturally align with environmental values by avoiding packaging and shipping
Offer opportunities for personal growth and learning
Give the recipient something truly unique and personalized
For those of us seeking to live more sustainably, experiential gifts provide an elegant solution to the challenge of giving meaningfully while minimizing environmental impact. They let us express our care for both our loved ones and our planet.

How to Present Your Experiential Gift
While the gift itself may be intangible, you can still make the presentation special:
Create a handmade certificate describing the experience
Include a small, related token (like a hiking compass for a park pass)
Write a heartfelt note explaining why you chose this experience
If applicable, include a schedule or calendar to plan the experience together
Use sustainable wrapping like furoshiki (Japanese fabric wrapping) if you're including any physical items
Planning Tips
Research Local Options: Support businesses in your community to reduce transportation emissions and strengthen local economies.
Consider Timing: Look for experiences that can be enjoyed during less busy seasons to support year-round business sustainability.
Match Interests: Choose experiences that align with the recipient's genuine interests and schedule flexibility.
Plan Ahead: Many experience providers offer special holiday rates or packages when booked in advance.
Think Accessibility: Ensure the experience is accessible and comfortable for your recipient's physical abilities and preferences.
Environmental Impact
By choosing experiential gifts, you're making a significant environmental impact:
Reducing waste from packaging and wrapping
Lowering carbon emissions from manufacturing and shipping
Supporting sustainable local businesses
Encouraging mindful consumption
Creating value through experiences rather than things
Making It Personal
The key to a successful experiential gift is personalization. Consider:
The recipient's interests and bucket list
Their available time and schedule
Physical location and transportation needs
Whether they'd prefer a solo experience or a shared activity
Any seasonal preferences
Beyond the Holidays
While the holiday season prompts us to rethink our gift-giving, experiential gifts are perfect for any occasion:
Birthdays
Anniversaries
Graduations
Thank you gifts
Just because
The Ripple Effect
When you give an experiential gift, you're not just reducing waste – you're helping to shift cultural norms around consumption and joy. You're showing others that meaningful gifts don't have to come in packages and that the most valuable presents often can't be wrapped.
Your Action Steps This Week
Identify one gift you plan to give that could be an experience
Research local experience providers in your community
Consider your recipients' interests and schedules
Book or reserve experiences early to ensure availability
Plan how you'll present your gift in an eco-friendly way
Remember, the most sustainable gift is one that creates joy without creating waste. By choosing experiences over objects, you're giving something truly precious: the gift of time, attention, and memory-making, all while protecting our planet for future generations to enjoy.

Experiential Gifts and Happiness: Research by Dr. Thomas Gilovich of Cornell University shows that experiences lead to greater and more lasting happiness than material possessions. Experiences are less prone to comparison, contribute to personal identity, and create fond memories that grow more meaningful over time.
Strengthening Relationships: Studies by Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner found that experiential gifts strengthen social bonds more effectively than material ones. Experiences evoke stronger emotional reactions and gratitude, fostering deeper connections.
This is a very thoughtful message. I wish I would have seen it a bit earlier in the year.
